adelante, we’re open.
I had my first pop up a couple of weekends ago at the Phoenix Festival of The Arts. It was so cute and fun. Were you there? If so, thank you so much for stopping by, que gusto verte!
Aside from the people, one of my favorite parts was setting up the little space to display my work as well as welcome visitors to pause. El aroma de copal y creosote, hot tea, a bench to rest. I wove in the season’s bounty, persimmons, cinnamon, and pine, with the display of work that has formed through me this past year.
This event was special because it brought Barro Y Raiz into the world in a more tangible way. The seed has been planted maybe forever, and the name, the logo, the vision truly blossomed in 2019. Since then I’ve birthed two whole humans and so much in my brain has shifted, and I keep coming back to this.
barro: mud, clay
raiz: root
It’s about the ultimate way I have learned to connect to the present moment, to this life. Through the literal act of having my hands in the clay or in the soil, and through many other ways of playing, creating, and being that are connect me to my roots.
My pottery creations live here, of course, but Barro Y Raiz expands far beyond the form. It includes the rhythmic way in which our life is one little art after the other, how the kids explore the garden and interact with the mud, and the natural play and exploration that feels nourishing and connective.
